Character Name: Ruthie Snyder
Age: 28
Race: Human
Best Setting: 1920s, realistic or supernatural/fantasy
Appearance: Ruthie stands at 5'9, weighs approximately 130 pounds and 34B-25-24 are her measurements. Her hair has a soft curl and is cut to her chin though, when straight, falls to the end of her neck. It is a rich earth brown color and is often accented around her features which have a strange appeal to them. She had unconventional beauty - porcelain skin, eyes of a bright sky blue, and a smile that is slightly crooked but becoming. Some would say that she has an awkward grace, a fluid lankiness that is very suitable to her personality. While her curves are slight, she knows how to choose clothing to accent what she has to work with.
History:
Ruthie was born in Boston, Massachusetts to parents who were, respectively, a butcher and a secretary. She was an only child and they provided her a warm, loving home where she was treated fairly, given some voice, and never treated as if she were a child. While they did all this for her, they were very protective of her to the point where they opted out of sending her to school and, instead, enrolled her in a home study program where either one of her parents would help her with her studies as well as a tutor coming weekly to give her lessons, check on her progress, and administer any testing that needed to be done. She was a bright student that would have excelled in school amongst her peers, but was never given such a chance. At the age of sixteen, after years of being cooped up and told she couldn't do this and couldn't do that, Ruthie decided that she had enough of people "protecting" her and telling her what to do. One evening while her parents were asleep, she packed up as much as she could reasonable carry, took some things to sell and some money, and took the first train that would link her from Boston to Chicago.
She thought that it would be an adventure, but what she didn't expect was just how hard living on her own at such a young age was and definitely hadn't been prepared for dealing with people thanks to her parents. Her first night in Chicago, she slept in an alley behind a club listening to the music that was coming from within. One of the workers in the kitchen came out to put a bag of trash in the bin and spotted her trying to hide in the shadows as she sat upon the ground. He tried to get her to move on her way, but she lied and told him that she was meeting someone and couldn't leave just yet. Satisfied, but suspicious, he nodded and slipped back into the club. The next day she went around the city trying to find work and a place to sell what she'd taken from her home, coming up with enough money for two weeks in a hotel and very little left so she could eat. The following night, after no one would even think about hiring her, she returned to the club and knocked loudly on the back door in the alley. A different man answered and he was the first to hear of her situation. After encouraging her to return home and listening to her refusing to do so, he told her to wait there. When he came back, he told her if she wasn't against washing dishes, she could have a job.
Ruthie worked there for a year washing dishes before they offered her a position as a waitress in the club to which they ensured she was trained thoroughly before being put to work. It was a welcomed change of pace that got her out amongst the audience, was able to fully enjoy the atmosphere. She worked just like that until she was twenty years old when she met a man that came to the club one night who took an interest in her. Oh, not as a lover. He was married, had children, and already had a mistress to boot and couldn't handle another person on his plate. No, he told her that she had an interesting look and wondered if she ever thought about getting into show business. At first she thought he was out of his mind. She never thought about being an actress, a singer, or anything of the like not that she didn't admire those people! She was always content to be as she was. What he offered her was slightly out of the ordinary. He told her he traveled the Vaudeville circuit but was getting ready to settle there in Chicago as a club regular there. When she asked what the job was that he was offering her, she had no idea that she would be taken from one position and put in one as a magician's assistant.
They were actually a successful team, staying together until she was twenty-six years old doing their act in the city. When he started to have bigger dreams of New York and the stage, she started to pull back a little as she considered Chicago her home. He never got to live out his dream anyway. His wife found out that he was seeing another woman and had children with her. It was a very uncivilized situation and he put a gun to his head when he saw he was losing everything. So for the last two years, Ruthie has been living, still, in Chicago. She's gone back to waiting on tables in a club and has given up her days in show business though, every once in awhile, she'll be recognized by one of the patrons she waits on. The men that remember her are very fond of requesting that she put one of her old, skimpy outfits for their viewing pleasure and she takes it in stride. After all, it's nice to get noticed and recognized every once in awhile!
